To reduce feed costs liquid feed systems can be interesting for pig farmers. Many by-products or waste products from the food industry can be fed to pigs. However, the quality and taste of these raw materials can vary and microbial control is important to assure consistent production results.

Often yeasts and moulds can be found in liquid feed, leading to gastro intestinal problems and reduction of available nutrients. Dry matter loss can go up to as high as 40%.

Additionally a change in taste and odor of the liquid feed mixture is likely to occur, by which the maximum feed intake is reduced.
