“Organic acids?” From facts to farm or from farm to facts?

While the antibiotic usage within the livestock industry is steadily reducing over the past decade, we need to keep the animals in good health to reach their full genetic potential. Organic acids are successfully used for a good intestinal function during the starter period, before- and after feed changes, after vaccinations and to support the protein digestion within the gastro-intestinal tract.
In addition it’s important within the range of organic acids used in drinking water, what kind of organic acids you use. The organic acid products can be distinguished between buffered or non-buffered. When minerals are added to the organic acids, are these minerals supplemented in an organic or inorganic form? In this article a short explanation of the different acids used in drinking water for pigs will be described.

The effect of organic acids
Several studies have shown that organic acids such as formic acid and propionic acid have a positive influence on growth performance of pigs. In addition, organic acids have an antibacterial activity which is related to the reduction of pH value. The reduction of the gastrointestinal (GI) pH leads to increased gastric protein digestibility which improves weight gain. The antimicrobial action of organic acids takes place in both the water and in the GI-tract of the animal.

The effect of mineral-chelates and mineral sulphates
Copper and zinc both play an important role in diverse body processes. Especially copper is well known for its role in the first line of defence in the immune system namely, the production of acute phase proteins. The advantage of using minerals in chelated forms (organic form), instead of sulphate (inorganic form), is that the binding with chelates ensures a better uptake. In this way 80 – 95% of the inorganic trace elements that are fed are lost as insoluble products in the manure. Chelate bound trace elements are bound to multiple amino acids to ensure the trace element remains bound at a low pH. Approximately 85% of the trace element in chelate form reach intact the place of destination, namely the wall of the small intestine, where it is absorbed into the bloodstream.

The difference between buffered and non-buffered acids
In solution acid partly dissociate by releasing a H+-ion. Each organic acid has its own eagerness to give away this H+-ion. The H+ ion will lower the pH and perform their antibacterial effect in the stomach and the intestine of the animal. Buffering organic acids reduce the corrosiveness of the product and slows down the drop in pH and therefore it’s possible to add more mmol acid with H+ ions to the water before pH is below the target pH of 3.8.. Non-buffered acids will already dissociate in the water before entering the body and therefore perfect to lower the pH of the drinking water.

Conclusion
Buffered organic acids take care of lowering the pH of the drinking water and in the first part of the gastrointestinal tract. Because of the H+ ions the acids have an anti-microbial effect in the drinking water. Buffered acids are mainly effective in the GI tract and drinking water, while non-buffered acids will resolve in the drinking water. Copper and zinc are known to support for their anti-microbial effect and support of the immune system. If copper and zinc are connected to a chelate the uptake and effect is even better, as the chelate keeps his bound with the mineral during low pH in the stomach. To optimise results it is therefore recommended to use a blend of organic acids which are buffered.
