The effect of extra nutrients and minerals in broiler houses in the Netherlands

Abstract

The supplementing of extra nutrients was examined for their effects on intestinal health and growth of broiler chickens. In the experiment, 21 day broiler chicks were fed 2 different diets: a basic diet with no supplements, and the second group was given a diet with 5 days of Nutriforte® Vivace a product based on organic acids and extra nutrients and minerals. All houses were given a herbal extract after the Gumboro vaccination. In house 1 and 6 the feed conversion, mortality and profit was higher than in the houses without Nutriforte Vivace.

 

These data demonstrate that broiler performance can be influenced by supplements with extra nutrients and minerals. Also adding organic acids through the drinking water is positive for the health and growth of animals.

Introduction

Nutriforte Vivace is suitable for long-term use, supplementing nutrients and stimulating the natural immune system. Nutriforte Vivace contains four essential amino acids; methionine, tryptophan, threonine and lysine which are often the limiting building blocks of proteins (1,2,3). In addition, Nutriforte Vivace contains minerals in the form of copper, zinc and magnesium.

Furthermore, ingredients have been added that optimize the utilization of nutrients, such as organic acids. Organic acids support the digestion of proteins (4), with lactic acid being particularly known for its growth stimulating effect on positive bacteria in the intestine (5). The vitamin B complex (B1, B3, B5 B6 and B12) plays an important role in both fat, carbohydrate and protein digestion (6).

Nutriforte Vivace is successfully used to promote feed conversion in poultry and to reduce intestinal lesions in specific parasitic infections.

In a field trial at a broiler farm in the Netherlands with slow growing birds (54 days) we tested Nutriforte Vivace in 2 houses in the winter of 2020 and compared the results with 4 houses without Nutriforte Vivace.

Nutriforte Vivace

Nutriforte Vivace supports the animal by providing constantly accessible minerals, amino acids, vitamins and organic acids. This allows the animals to better cope with sub-optimal conditions when the need for nutrients is higher. Nutriforte also has a positive effect on growth, feed conversion and fertility and reduces the drop-out rate.

Herbal extract

The herbal extract is used to support digestion, especially to prevent Coccidiosis problems. In addition, good effects are seen when the product is used to support intestinal recovery in case of intestinal problems such as feed changes, inoculations or Clostridium infections. Contains, among other things: essential oils and herbal extracts.

4.  Conclusion

The most important conclusion is that the feed conversion in the Nutriforte Vivace houses is lower than in the houses where no Nutriforte Vivace was used. This difference is the biggest between house 1 and house 4. The birds of house 1 and 4 are from the same breeders. Because of this they have the same genetic background. The difference in feed conversion is 0.05. The difference between barn 5 and 6 is 0.04 in feed conversion, these animals also have the same parents. If you calculate these figures back to a weight of 1500 grams per chick, the difference is even bigger.

If we look at mortality, it is especially striking that house 2 has the highest mortality. The animals have been sick here, according to the farmer is was the reo-virus that causes the high mortality. Because of this virus a lot of animals died. Because of this, the data of this house cannot be compared with the other houses.

What is also striking is that the animals in house 1 and 6 are heavier than the animals in house 2,

4 and 5. The animals in house 6 were also slaughtered 2 days earlier than the animals in house 1, 2 and 3. The daily growth rate in house 6 was the highest of the houses and the animals had the lowest feed conversion.

It is clear from table 4 that house 6 has the highest profit per chicken. Because of the good feed conversion and the low mortality, this house is the best of the 6 houses. House 6 gives the owner 7 cents more per chick than the chicks from house 2 and 4. House 1, where Nutriforte Vivace is also used, delivers 5 euro cents more per chick than the chicks from house 2 and 4. This are big numbers if you start calculating the number of animals that are put on a farm.

 

5.  Discussion

The different ingredients from Nutriforte Vivace have a positive effect on the growth and feed conversion of the chicks. The organic acids from Nutriforte ensure that the nutrients from the feed are better absorbed by the intestines (5). The organic acids ensure a lower pH value in the stomach which stimulates digestion. The proteins from the feed are cut into smaller pieces, amino acids, by the peptin in the stomach. These amino acids are absorbed into the intestines further on in the digestive track. Amino acids are the building blocks for the body (7). The essential amino acids in the body come from food but also from the Nutriforte Vivace. This ensures better growth.

Because the Nutriforte Vivace is used around the Gumboro vaccination it supports the chicken during a critical period. The Gumboro vaccination ensures that weakened germs to enter the animal and build up resistance against this disease. This period causes the animal to put energy in building up the resistance. The minerals from the Nutriforte Vivace ensure that this period causes no problems. The copper ensures that the bacteria in the intestines are challenged and zinc ensures good intestinal health (8). essential in this period.
